When It Doesn’t Make Sense: Trusting God in the Highs and the Lows
By Samuel Troyer ·
There are days when the sun shines and life feels like it’s finally coming together — your prayers are being answered, your path feels clear, and joy bubbles up like a wellspring you never knew existed.
And then… there are the other days.
The ones where you can’t get out of bed.
The ones where the tears come for no reason.
The ones where silence feels louder than God’s voice.
Where hope seems like a stranger, and faith feels like a fight.
I’ve lived both.
I’ve praised God on mountaintops.
And I’ve cried out to Him in the deepest valleys — wondering if He even sees me down here.
But here’s the thing I’ve learned, and keep learning:
God isn’t just the God of breakthroughs.
He’s the God of the in-between.
The confusion.
The heartbreak.
The delay.
The loss.
The “Why didn’t You stop this?”
He’s still God there.
I’ve questioned Him.
Yelled at Him.
Sat in silence with Him.
And every single time — when I had nothing left — He met me. Not always with answers. But always with presence.
Sometimes the biggest breakthrough is not when your situation changes — but when your heart does. When your strength doesn’t come from you anymore, but from knowing that you belong to Someone who holds you when you can’t hold yourself together.
If you’re in a valley right now, please hear this:
You’re not forgotten.
You’re not too broken.
God hasn’t given up on you — even if you’ve given up on Him.
Faith isn’t about feeling strong all the time.
It’s about trusting the One who is, even when you’re falling apart.
So keep walking, even if it’s slow.
Keep crying out, even if it feels like no one’s listening.
Because He is.
And He’s not just writing your story —
He’s in the middle of it.
Let’s trust Him… not just when the sun is shining,
but even when all we can see is rain.
