From Fear to Freedom: My Story, My Mission

By ·

There was a moment — in October 2024 — where I realized I could not live another day in fear. I was tired of being miserable. Tired of pretending. Tired of waiting for freedom to just “happen.” It didn’t. Instead, I made a decision. I surrendered. And God met me there. I can’t even describe the walls that were torn down in my heart that day. The freedom. The joy. The absolute breakthrough that hit me like a tidal wave — it changed everything. But freedom didn’t come without a fight. When I was 17, I was caught in darkness — struggling with things I now regret deeply. Things I won’t name here — but they had a grip on me. I reached a breaking point and made a choice that the Amish church told me not to make: I went to a Christian counseling center in Ohio. They said I would be misled. That I’d “stray from the Amish faith.” They were half right — I did stray. But not away from God. I strayed away from legalism, from shame, from the belief that you have to dress a certain way or follow man-made rules to be loved by God. I came home changed. Redeemed. I knew now more than ever that I didn’t have to be Amish to get to Heaven — no matter what the bishop said. Helping Others Break Free Since then, I’ve made it my life mission to walk beside others who feel trapped the way I once did. I’ve helped young men leave the Amish. I’ve watched them discover their identity, their freedom, their calling. There’s one story I’ll never forget. A young man I picked up was absolutely broken. I could see it in his eyes — the same emotional trauma I had lived through. A few days later, in a small prayer meeting, I watched the Holy Spirit move through him. He surrendered. He accepted Christ. I wouldn’t even recognize him today if you compared him to the man I met that first day. He’s free now. But many others are still stuck — paralyzed by fear. They’re told if they leave, they’ll go to hell. That no one will help them. That they’ll never speak to their family again. But I’m here to tell you — that’s a lie. What Freedom Means to Me Freedom isn’t about rebellion. It’s not about proving anyone wrong. It’s about not letting fear control your life. Not letting people’s opinions define your worth. I am a child of God — and no one can take that from me. If I could go back in time, I’d tell myself this: “When you ask God to forgive you, don’t pick those sins back up. Don’t go back to the cross and grab the shame again. You’ve been set free.” Who I Am Today Three years ago, I barely knew anything about technology. Today, I’m a full-time web designer at Troyer Websites. I didn’t go to college. I don’t even have a GED. I learned it all because I refused to quit. I even started my own business — Traditional Siding LLC — and for a while, I was also a volunteer firefighter with the Greensburg, Kentucky Fire Department. And the greatest blessing of all? I’m engaged to the most beautiful, kind-hearted woman I’ve ever met — and we’re getting married in November 2025. God truly writes the best stories. What I’ve Learned That God is deeply loving — not angry, not distant. That helping people requires more than advice — it requires presence. That true change starts when we stop hiding and start surrendering. I’m not perfect. I’m still learning. But I’ve seen lives change — and I’ve seen what God can do with one broken person who decides not to give up. Final Thoughts If you’ve made it this far, I want to thank you. I don’t share this for attention. I share it because someone out there needs hope. Maybe that someone is you. If you’re trapped in fear, in shame, or in religion without relationship — know this: You don’t have to stay there. God sees you. God loves you. And freedom is possible — one step, one surrender, one honest moment at a time. “When fear screams loud, let faith rise louder.” Let’s walk this road together. – Samuel Troyer
